A contractor with healthy overall margins and two unprofitable jobs looks fine on an annual profit and loss statement and is quietly losing money. Job costing is the difference between knowing that and finding out later.
What gets tracked
- Job costing and per-project profitability reporting
- Work-in-progress schedules and percentage-of-completion tracking
- Retainage receivable and payable tracked separately
- Change order tracking against the original contract value
- Subcontractor management, W-9 collection and 1099 filing
- Certificate of insurance tracking for subs
- Equipment cost allocation and depreciation schedules
- Multi-state payroll for crews working across state lines
- Lender, bonding and prequalification reporting packages
How we work with you
Everything is delivered remotely, so it makes no difference whether you are in Little Rock, Chicago or Sacramento. Bank feeds, cloud accounting and a monthly call are the whole mechanism. Books are kept in QuickBooks Online or Xero — whichever suits the business — and payroll, sales tax and 1099 filings are handled in every state you operate in.
Common questions
Can you track profitability by job?
That is the main reason contractors come to us. It requires the chart of accounts and the payroll to be set up to support it, which is usually the first thing we fix.
Do you handle retainage?
Yes, tracked as its own receivable so your aged receivables report is not distorted by money that is not yet due.
We have crews working in two states. Does that complicate payroll?
It does, and it is handled — each state a crew works in generally needs its own withholding and unemployment registration. We tell you which ones you actually need.
